Reflective Supervision Agreement

Counsellor midwife

Purpose of Reflective Supervision

Reflective supervision provides a confidential, supportive, and non-judgemental space to reflect on the emotional and professional impact of working within birth, maternity, and reproductive care.

The purpose of supervision is to support:

  • Reflective practice
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Professional sustainability
  • Self-awareness
  • Safe and compassionate practice
  • Processing the emotional impact of birth work

This is not managerial supervision, performance assessment, or formal clinical oversight.

Supervisor Background

I am both a qualified counsellor and experienced midwife, with over 30 years of counselling experience alongside extensive maternity experience.

I am PMA trained, and my specialist area of research is supervision for birth workers.

My approach is reflective, trauma-informed, compassionate, and collaborative.

Frequency of Sessions

Sessions may be arranged as:

  • One-off reflective sessions
  • Monthly supervision
  • Bi-monthly supervision
  • Ongoing support as required

The frequency of supervision can be reviewed collaboratively at any time.

Confidentiality

All sessions are confidential.

However, confidentiality may only be broken where:

  • there      is serious concern regarding risk of harm to yourself or others
  • there      are safeguarding concerns involving a child or vulnerable adult
  • disclosure      is required by law
  • professional      ethical obligations require consultation or disclosure

Wherever possible, any need to break confidentiality would be discussed openly with you first.

Brief anonymised supervision notes may be kept securely for professional and insurance purposes in accordance with GDPR and professional standards.

Boundaries of Supervision

Reflective supervision is different from counselling or psychotherapy.

Although personal experiences and emotions may naturally arise within reflective work, the primary focus remains connected to your professional role, experiences within birth work, and the emotional impact of practice.

If at any stage it is felt that personal therapy may be more appropriate or additionally supportive, this can be discussed sensitively and collaboratively.

Cancellations & Missed Sessions

A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is requested for cancellations or rearrangements.

Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice may be charged in full unless due to emergency circumstances.

If you arrive late, the session will still finish at the agreed time.

If I ever need to cancel a session unexpectedly, an alternative appointment will be offered as soon as possible.

Online Sessions

For online supervision:

  • Please ensure you are in a private and confidential space where you feel comfortable to speak openly.
  • A stable internet connection and suitable device are required.
  • Please avoid attending sessions whilst driving or in public spaces.

Professional Responsibility

Reflective supervision does not replace:

  • organisational clinical supervision requirements
  • safeguarding responsibilities
  • professional accountability frameworks
  • emergency mental health support

You remain professionally accountable for your own practice and decision-making.

Ending Supervision

Either party may end supervision at any time.

Where possible, it is encouraged that endings are discussed within supervision so that the work can be reflected upon and concluded safely and respectfully
